Von Strasser is a small boutique winery that specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon. We thought the wines were excellent and had a very enjoyable experience with a tasting in the caves. Tastings are definitely by appointment only as the winery is small but definitely worth a visit. The Cabernets are big, jammy with lots of tannins, typical of the mountain fruit. The winery has won the "winery of the year award" from Wine and Spirits 6 years in a row. Good wines and a good tasting experience so definitely recommended.

2006 Diamond Mountain District Cabernet ($50)Rating: C
Apr 4th, 2009
The most popular of the Von Strasser Cabernets and half the production. The wine you would find at a restaurant. 85% Cab, 6% Malbec, 5% Petite Verdot, 2% Zinfandel and 1% Merlot. The wine was a little cold when we tried it and would have been better a few degrees warmer. A big wine with big tannins that needs time in the bottle. Would like to try it with a little age.
2006 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($70)Rating: C
Apr 6th, 2009
80% Cabernet, 10% Petite Verdot, 10% Malbec. 865 cases. Really chewy wine, deep garnet in color, this wine undoubtedly needs to sit down for a few years. The rating should improve but right now I am not sure how well this will age. Can the fruit hold up to the large tannins?
2006 Rainin Cabernet Sauvignon ($75)Rating: C

Bursting with concentrated fruit flavours, good tannins and balanced. Very nice long fruity finish - this should age well.
2006 Post Cabernet Sauvignon ($75)Rating: B-C
Mar 20th, 2010
Very tannic, with some evidence of fruit underneath the tannins. Concentrated flavours should develop into good fruit and body over time.
2006 Sori Bricco Cabernet Sauvignon ($70)Rating: B-C
Mar 20th, 2010
Taken from the highest elevation vineyard - with very rocky soil. Very dry on the palate, with concentrated flavours alongside the big tannins. Would need a lot of time to open up - hopefully the wine is balanced when the fruit and tannins settle.
2006 Marcellini Cabernet Franc ($60)Rating: B
Mar 20th, 2010
Classic Cabernet Franc fruit with medium tannins. Good fruits and body, but pricey for the depth of flavour.
2007 Diamond Mountain Zinfandel ($40)Rating: B
Mar 20th, 2010
Chewy Zin with lots of tannins, but not too peppry. Does not really taste like a Zin - good fruit.
2009 Gruner Veltliner ($45)Rating: A-B
Mar 20th, 2010
This is the only winery in Napa that produces this varietal - not always a good idea. Crisp pear flavours that really needs to be chilled. Not to be drunk at room temperature.
