I heard about Lewelling from a friend who we had over for dinner so I was looking forward to trying their wines. On a recent trip to Napa, we called them up that morning and were lucky enough that they had an opening in the afternoon. The Lewelling family have been farming their land on the south side of St Helena since 1864 and started producing their own label in 1992. They only produce Cabernet Sauvignon and sell a lot of their grapes to customers such as Caymus, so their productions are small on their Lewelling label (about 1000-1500 cases). The wines are excellent though - we were very impressed. Also we were very impressed with the service. Haley (assistant winemaker), met us at the winery (which, by the way, you would never find - we thought we were at somebody's house), and treated us to two glasses of the excellent 2006 Cabernets, outside overlooking the vineyards with bread and cheese. It was very low key and not something you typically find in Napa these days. Our only complaint?? We could not spend any money. Not on the tasting or on purchasing some of the fine wine (which by the way is excellent value), which kind of makes you wonder why Haley even bothered to meet us! Fantastic service and fantastic wines. Highly recommended. All wines are sold through distribution and the mailing list. 11/23/2010: We met with Dave Wight (winemaker and owner) at Lewelling and were treated to a few glasses of the exceptional 2008 Lewelling Cabernets. Dave is great. Very knowledgeable and just a really nice person to sit down with and learn about the wines and the vintages. We really like Lewelling and highly recommend anybody who likes great California Cabernets to sign up for the mailing list. Great prices, great wines, great people; the only problem is that they sell out in days. The 2008's sold out in 3 days!!

2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard ($50)Rating: C-D

Both Cabs are bought as a pair for $98 on the mailing list (if you can get on it). The 2006 Wight Vineyard has 95% Cab Sauvignon and 5% Cab Franc and is a fantastic wine. It will definitely improve with time. "Licorice", rich dark berries. Fills your mouth and leads to an excellent, long finish. Very good wine.

Beautiful wine. Great structure. Lots of fruit up front and a finish that goes on and on. This wine will last years. Great flavors. Excellent!!

3% Cab Franc with 97% Cab Sauvignon. Very nice Cabernet - excellent structure. Nice fruit upfront with good balance and long tannins. Dense purple color. Very good wine that will get better with some time. "Chocolate"

Very nice Cabernet as always from Lewelling. Dark ruby great, beautiful nose, great fruit and balanced finish. Drinking surprisingly well for a wine that has just been released. Will get better with some age. Aged 18 months in French oak

2011 was a very tough year with the late storm. Lewelling picked their grapes early, but as always have produced a very nice wine. Extremely hard to buy as you have to be on their mailing list and they sell out in about 1 hour every year. If you can get your hands on Lewelling, it is one of the best value wines in Napa
