Based in a 120 year old winery, Ladera are known for their mountain cabernets from Howell & Mt Veeder. The building has three floors - and uses gravity flow to produce the wines. Grapes arrive on the top floor, they are then fed into fermentation tanks on the second floor, and then into barrels on the lowest floor. We tasted with Susan who was very friendly and accomodated a larger group than originally expected. She was well versed in the history of the winery and vineyards, although seemed overly focused on the price point of each wine.

2005 Lone Canyon, Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon ($50)Rating: B-C

Medium fruit, with a lovely finish. Less body than the Howell, but a long finish - the blend is a good combination of the upfront Howell and long finish of the Mt Veeder.
2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($39)Rating: B-C

Blend of Mt Veeder and Howell Mountain vineyards. Good robust tannins with plenty of fruit. "Tasty"
2004 Lone Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($65)Rating: B

From their Mt Veeder estate, this wine dries the mouth more than the HM. Good fruit smell on the nose and it has a volcanic/rutherford dust type flavour. Another one that needs time to sit, a little more approachable than the HM Cab.
2005 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($70)Rating: B

This should really be decanted - lots of tannins. Difficult to rate this coming straight out of the bottle, would need to let this sit for some time. Would like ot taste again in a few years.
2005 Napa Valley Malbec ($40)Rating: B
Jul 11th, 2008
Big wine, very tannic similar texture to the Cabs - Gordon liked this one more than the opther wines (he is a fan of Malbec).
2007 Sauvignon Blanc ($25)Rating: A-B

Very citrusy - like sucking on a lemon. Izzy liked this one initially.
