Sequoia Grove make consistently good Cabernets, and we always like to call into the winery to sample some of them when we are driving by. The winery itself is an old farmhouse surrounded by sequoia trees in the heart of Rutherford - it's a prime location yet a lot of tourists seem to bypass it to go to the larger, more famous neighbors. That's definitely their loss as the wines at Sequoia Grove are excellent, the location is stunning and the service is always good. The wines are well priced and the tasting room is a comfortable size. A great place to visit.

Attended the members party on opening day for 2001 Reserve Cabernet. Initially service was poorer than we normally experience. Event was busy and overwhelmed the tasting room staff. Service got better during our time there.

A few weeks later we got a free shipment 3L of 2002 Cab that was raffled at the winery - and my name was picked out of the hat !!!

Lots of fruit on the nose, supposedly a bad year in Napa, but this wine has good body and the classic volcanic ash rutherford cabernet tones. Good tannins with a nice smooth finish - always impressed with the Sequoia cabernets.

Beautiful aroma - very much like a Bordeaux style wine, good flavour in the mouth and has potential to improve in time. Will look forward to tasting this one again.

Classic Sequoia Grove nose - good fruit and structure on the palate. Nice and smooth on the finish.
2005 Rutherford Bench Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($60)Rating: C
Feb 8th, 2009
Retasted in February, more depth and fruit in the mid-palate, with a very smooth long finish. Oct 25,08: (B-C) 81% CS, 8% Mer, 8% CF. You can taste the smoothness of the Cabernet Franc and the finish of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Good, but not great - was hoping for more. It may improve in time as this was the first tasting.
1984 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($35)Rating: B-C

Musty with a little fruit, but still some tannins that has a medium long finish

A hint of fruit and plenty of tannins (mostly in the bottom of the glass).
1989 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($55)Rating: B-C

Good nose, needed double decanting. Not bad for an old wine, would hold off on more at this price. Probably better in past years.

Still lots of fruit on the nose when opened, but softened within an hour. Classic Rutherford palate with good structure and balance with hints of coffee and tobacco finish. Still a couple of years left on this.
1996 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($65)Rating: B-C
Jul 10th, 2005
Hard to taste after the 2001 Reserve. Not as good a nose with an ashy aftertaste.
1996 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Magnum) ($120)Rating: B-C
Feb 18th, 2006
Fruity nose, but lost a little flavour in the glass. Not as powerful as 2001 or 2002 Reserve. Shows a lot of balance and medium finish, but probably towards end of life.
1998 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Magnum) ($110)Rating: B-C

Past its best, watery finish
1994 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Magnum) ($128)Rating: B
Aug 11th, 2005
Different tones from other Sequoia cabernets due to different source of grapes that does not hold up as well as other years
2005 Rebellious Red ($30)Rating: B
Aug 23rd, 2008
60/40 Syrah/Cab. This the first time that Sequoia have blend with their Cab. Just released under a distinctive label. Good fruit and a little bitter on the finish before the tannins kick in. Not a huge fan of this blend.
2005 Stagecoach Syrah ($28)Rating: B
Aug 23rd, 2008
Good chalky fruit, tannic finish should age well. Nice drinker probably better with food.
2007 Rebellious Red ($30)Rating: B
Mar 20th, 2010
Dark chocolate and raspberry with a fruity dry (chalky) finish. Pleasant and a good midweek drinker
2007 Syrah ($23)Rating: B
Mar 20th, 2010
Tart with lots of body, with a lot of finish - needs time to develop
1994 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($38)Rating: A-B
Feb 2nd, 2008
Brownish in colour with a lot of sediment that required filtering. Initially had a funky vegetable smell, but this dissipated after decanting for 2 hours. No real fruit left and had limited flavour on the finish. It should be noted that this vintage was not from the estate, as they has a disease in the vines.
2003 Napa Valley Syrah ($32)Rating: A-B
Jul 10th, 2005
This is a first release for the winery, and needs a little work. Not very good value, one to avoid.
