If you have not visited any of the wineries up Spring Mountain Road, then we highly recommend you do. The road up to the wineries is a little tricky but the wineries, wines and service are all excellent and a nice break from the chaos of the large wineries on the valley floor. Terra Valentine is one such winery that we definitely recommend. Tastings are strictly by appointment only so make sure to call in advance, but definitely worth it. It was our first winery of the day on a cold but sunny January morning and our server, Heidi, was excellent. The winery itself has a great history and has some beautiful stainglass windows. Heidi gave us a good overview of the history and took us on a tour. This was then finished by tasting some of their very good wines in a beautiful tasting room sitting around a large table. The wines were accompanied by cheeses, nuts and chocolate. The one downside is that a lot of their big Cabs are sold through their mailing list so you cannot get to taste them at the winery.

1997 Wurtele Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($60)Rating: C
Feb 9th, 2007
Good nose, well balanced - not as much fruit left and starting to fade, but good mouth feel and a mouth filling. Julian and Robert got stuck at the 1997 for at least an hour - "The 97 is consistent - it comes in the same as it goes out"
2003 Wurtele Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($55)Rating: C

Big mouth flavours, you can taste the extra oak. Smooth drinker with a medium finish, should age for 7-10 years.
2004 I Block Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($45)Rating: C

100% cabernet S. Bottle was open the prior day, drinking very well, good fruit and finish - black cherry with nice chewy finish, nice tannins and fruit.
2003 Cabernet Sauvignon ($35)Rating: B-C

Dry on the palete, good tannins and less oak than the reserve. Good value
2005 Pinot Noir ($38)Rating: B-C
Feb 9th, 2007
Tight raspberry taste, medium long finish that is balanced and should age well - a solid Pinot, very drinkable
2006 Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir ($38)Rating: B-C

Soft and balanced - pinot blend of 3 vineyards. Soft on palate, nice nose. A smooth elegant pinot with a dry finish.
2006 Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon ($18)Rating: B-C

Dry with a cab like finish. very unusual appeals to a cab drinker. Surprisingly good - would be good with spicy food
2004 Spring Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($38)Rating: B
Jan 20th, 2008
97% Cab, 3% Cab Franc. A light cab, not much fruit and dies on the palate. Needs to open up more, not much fruit or finish. Was hoping for better.
2006 Russian River Viognier ($30)Rating: B
Jan 20th, 2008
Fruity nose, light and sweet with a sugary finish. Buttery first wine of the day - not mad about it
