Viansa is one of the first wineries you hit when driving to Napa / Sonoma from San Francisco, and it is definitely designed to handle a large amount of tourism. You cannot miss the winery itself as it is well located on top of a hill right beside the road. The parking lot is huge and always seems packed with cars and tour buses, and there is a really nice area outside the winery with picnic tables and a great view over the valley, so a great place to grab a bottle of wine and have some lunch (if you do not mind the crowds). The tasting room is very big and has two tasting bars at either end with a large area dedicated to retail. This is one of the few wineries we have been to that actually sells food and has a lot of great dips and sauces. The wine menu is also huge - we counted 19 wines on the tasting menu. When we were there, it was not packed so we had good service from the friendly staff. I am not sure if I would go in the height of the Summer though. Overall a very popular winery which caters well to the large crowds - Unfortunately the wines are nothing special though.

2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($50)Rating: B

Definitely better than the merlot, but does not have much body compared to the long finish. "Watery". Does not fill your mouth. Not worth $50. 15.3% ABV
2003 Samuele ($55)Rating: B

60% Cab Franc, 40% Cab. Again another wine with a huge finish that seems to lack body. Would not pay $55 for it. 14.8% ABV
2004 Freisa ($25)Rating: B

The server opened up the bottle in front of us so the wine had very little time to breathe which it definitely needed. This is a huge wine with good fruit and a finish that would suck every piece of moisture from your mouth. I would like to try it again. "Zin-like that keeps going". The most potential of the wines we tasted at Viansa. 15.5% ABV. Tried a bottle later using the blender test and the aeration improved the wine, but not necessarily one I would look forward to. If you like mouth sucking wines with alcohol then you'll like this one.
2004 Lorenzo Merlot ($44)Rating: A-B

Average nose for this young merlot. Not much fruit but again big tannins. The tannins seem to overpower everything else. Was not mad about it and do not see it improving too much. 15.1% ABV
