4/07/2007: We were on a bus tour with about 15 people, and Merryvale was the second winery visit of the day. We had been disappointed by our previous visits to Merryvale and were hoping this would be different, but unfortunately the wines were still disappointing. I don't think we will be going back to Merryvale in the near future 10/14/2006: We had been to Merryvale for a barrel tasting of their famous Profile wine previously, but were a wee bit drunk to take decent notes so we decided to call back in to check the winery out. The winery is well located right in the heart of St Helena and the tasting room is huge. Overall we were very disappointed with the service though. Perhaps it was because we called in on a Saturday afternoon and they were quite busy (generally we avoid Hwy 29 on the weekends). We were pretty much ignored at the wine bar and we noticed that the staff seemed more interested in selling the winery related merchandise which the tasting room is full of. Perhaps they get commission for non wine sales? Also we felt sorry for the people next to us who were getting hounded to join the wine club. In the meantime, all we were looking for was to taste some of their wines. Merryvale does have an excellent banquet room amongst the barrels that would make for an incredible party..... assuming the service is better than at the tasting room! They do use Riedel glasses which we found impressive.

2003 Profile ($99)Rating: C
Oct 14th, 2006
Profile is their famous blend. This is usually a very good wine. The 2003 has a big, long finish which definitely overpowers the fruit. This will get better with time. Too early to tell but seems pricey at $99
2000 Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon ($20)Rating: B-C

Good structure, with some fruit left. Reasonable for the price
2003 Beckstoffer Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon ($75)Rating: B-C

100% Cabernet. Big tannins. Fruit up front seems sharp but big finish at the end. I would like to try this wine in a year or two. It should definitely improve. At $75, seems expensive.
2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($24)Rating: B

Average cab, nothing special, but expected more
2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($39)Rating: B
Oct 14th, 2006
Started out with a good nose, but did not impress us after that. Dies quickly
2002 Reserve Merlot ($35)Rating: B
Oct 14th, 2006
75% Merlot, 23% Cab. It seemed very strong in alcohol with not much fruit. Not very impressed with this wine. Sharp
2003 Oakville Grade ($75)Rating: B
Apr 7th, 2007
88% Cabernet, 12% Cabernet Franc. Again, the structure just was not there and the finish was flat
2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($39)Rating: B

"The wine equivalent of a lemming. Starts out ok but falls off a cliff." No finish. Dies quickly. One of the more interesting quotes I heard was "It is like a sheet, not like a blanket"
2001 Dry Creek Syrah ($30)Rating: A-B
Oct 14th, 2006
Ouch. "Light a fire in my mouth". "It smells like wine". As you can probably tell, we did not like it.
2002 Napa Valley Syrah ($18)Rating: A-B
Apr 7th, 2007
I got a metallic finish off the wine. It had a "tangy" finish. Seemed watery without much structure
2003 Reserve Merlot ($35)Rating: A-B

Light merlot. Not much going on with it. Again, not much structure
2005 Carneros Pinot Noir ($45)Rating: A-B
Oct 14th, 2006
We got a metallic finish off the Pinot and did not find it good.
2005 Starmont ($28)Rating: A-B
Dec 27th, 2008
Very fruity, a little tart with short-medium finish. May improve with time, but probably not by much.
