Franciscan is another large, popular winery along Hwy 29 just before St Helena. The tasting room is very big and caters to a large crowd. We definitely recommend avoiding this area on a Saturday or Sunday as the traffic can be pretty bad, but if you do happen to be in the area, Franciscan is worth a visit. The Franciscan wines are consistently great value, which is surprising for this part of Napa. Their standard Merlot and Cabernet are always good drinking wines and are priced very well. Because the winery caters to a large tourist crowd, you can expect the service to not be as attentive as a smaller less popular winery. The servers do not care as much if you buy the wine or not as they will sell them anyway. We were at the counter for more than 5 minutes until we got an acknowledgement.

Wow. We were impressed with the Bordeaux Blend. Very well structured, good fruit and soft tannins. I would like to try this wine again in a few years. Great value under $50.

2003 Franciscan Merlot ($22)Rating: B-C

Nice fruity nose. Light finish. Vanishes quickly but does have a good structure. Great value at $22
2003 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon ($40)Rating: B-C

Starts tight, better in middle, short finish. This wine should improve with a little time in the bottle
2004 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon ($20)Rating: B-C

Claret coloured, with strong berry and coffee nose. Dry nut fills the mouth with rounded tannins - went well with Prime Rib. Should improve with a couple of years of storage.

Dark garnet colour, with good fruit on the nose. some tannin on the palate, but a short finish.
