Great tasting at the Appellation St Helena media tasting at the Rudd Center in the Culinary Institute. We had already been very impressed with the 2007 vintage from Napa Valley, and this tasting gave us an opportunity to try a variety of 2007 wines; very impressive all around. Five flights of wine altogether. Unfortunately we missed the first 2 flights but were very impressed with what we did get to try.
2007 is definitely turning out to be one of the best vintages from Napa Valley in years. It seems like one of those vintages that is was hard to make a bad wine. The Appellation St Helena tasting was proof of that. As stated we missed the first two flights which was unfortunate as there were wines listed I really wanted to taste. Oh well, just means another reason to get back to Napa!! The selection of wines were mainly Cabs as you would expect from St Helena. Prices varied from about $40 to over $200, with the majority in the $50 - $80 range. We missed flight 1 (whites) and flights 4 & 5 got into Bordeaux blends, Petite Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Some of the Cabs were huge and definitely need time to settle down. Big tannins, long finishes seemed the norm in a lot of the wines; some of them I am not sure how they would hold up over time. My wine of the day was the 2007 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, which at $130 a bottle is not an everyday wine, but this was exceptional. Beautiful nose, structure and balance, this wine will only get better. One of the better wines I have tried from Spottswoode. The Vineyard 29 were good but starting to get into the crazy money at $225 for the estate Cab. I was actually very impressed with Titus, and their 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon at $41 seemed to be one of the better deals of the day. A visit to Titus is definitely on the cards for the near future. I would love to have done this tasting blind which unfortunately I did not do at the time. Great all around though!!
